Bored Panda reached out to Raunak Sunder, known as Chef Ron, for advice on improving your home cooking skills. Chef Ron is a food enthusiast who shares eye-catching recipes on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. He provided cooking tips and advice for those feeling uninspired in the kitchen. Discover his expert insights below!

Although Chef Ron lacks formal culinary training, he has amassed a significant online following, particularly on TikTok, where two million users admire his delicious creations while also picking up basic cooking skills.

Chef Ron shares, “I’ve honed my skills through personal cooking experiences and by watching countless food videos over the years.” He emphasizes that cooking is a vital skill that everyone should possess, stating, “It enables you to manage your diet, safeguard your health, and save money.”

He reveals the motivation behind his social media journey by saying, “The other reason I launched my account was that I was extremely broke in college, so cooking my own meals was a necessity for survival. That period was momentous and enlightening for me, and I realized I could assist others in learning how to cook.”

Reflecting on his college days, he adds, “My meals were always incredibly affordable, delicious, and effortless to prepare. Understanding the difficulties I faced and how much cooking aided me convinced me that these recipes could benefit many others, which inspired me to start sharing food content,” Ron explains to Bored Panda.

There’s an abundance of social media content these days focused on cooking hacks and tips aimed at making cooking quicker, easier, and more efficient. We spoke to Ron about this trend, and he has mixed feelings.

“In my opinion, it’s a bit of a mixed bag because many hacks are genuinely helpful, but a considerable number are created solely for engagement or views and do not add any real value,” Ron explains.

This doesn’t imply that every cooking hack or trick is without merit. “For instance, I recently came across a tip where applying a small amount of oil around the rim of a pot while cooking pasta prevents the water from boiling over. It’s a really effective trick,” Chef Ron notes.

It gets me excited to prepare meals and brainstorm new recipes. Identify the elements you truly enjoy and incorporate them into your cooking routine to enhance the experience. There are always opportunities to make even the most routine tasks much more enjoyable and thrilling for yourself,” asserts Chef Ron.

You might assume that browsing through a list when hungry is unwise, as it could intensify your hunger and frustrate you for not having that scrumptious meal in hand. However, new studies indicate that viewing images of food might actually help alleviate hunger.

Researchers at Aarhus University have discovered that repeatedly viewing images of appetizing food can help curb hunger. Tjark Andersen, the study’s author, stated, “In our experiments, we found that participants felt more satiated after seeing the same food image 30 times, compared to before they saw the image.”

12 French Onion Soup

Additionally, the experiment showed that participants who were repeatedly shown images of the same food ended up ordering smaller portions compared to those who only saw the images a few times. According to Andersen, this occurs because our brains make us feel satiated, even when we haven’t actually eaten.

Seeing someone else cook can motivate us to try it ourselves. Have you heard about the Great British Bake Off effect? It’s a trend observed by the supermarket Aldi after one of the show’s episodes. According to their survey, 74% of customers felt inspired to bake at home after watching Bake Off.

Some retailers, such as Morrisons, have designated “bake officers” to manage the increased demand for specific ingredients. For instance, Series 6 included exotic ingredients like crystallized ginger and goldenberries, a superfruit from Peru. Morrisons’ bake officer was tasked with making sure all the stores had a steady supply of these unique ingredients, along with basics such as vanilla extract, flour, icing sugar, and yeast.

Interestingly, experts suggest that fine dining is on the decline. For instance, the iconic Copenhagen restaurant, Noma, is set to close by the end of 2024. According to industry insiders, the initial vision of such fine dining establishments was always unsustainable. “Customers desire assurance that the restaurants they visit contribute positively to their communities, that employees maintain a healthy work-life balance, receive fair wages, and experience job satisfaction,” chef Telly Justice told Bon Appétit.
