Introduction

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food—juicy, tangy, and just a little messy in the best way possible. This homemade version skips the canned mix and uses fresh ingredients to create a rich, savory-sweet filling that’s ready in under 30 minutes. Served on soft, toasted buns, these Sloppy Joes are perfect for weeknight dinners, casual gatherings, or feeding a hungry crowd.

Ingredients

(Serves 4–6)

Ad
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter version)
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4–6 hamburger buns, toasted
  • Butter for toasting buns (optional)

Method

  1. Cook the Meat:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned.
    • Drain excess grease.
  2. Add Veggies:
    • Stir in onion, bell pepper, and garlic.
    • Cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened.
  3. Build the Sauce:
    • Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Simmer:
    • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  5. Serve:
    • Spoon the filling onto toasted buns.
    • Serve hot with pickles, coleslaw, or chips on the side.

Storage

  • Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months; thaw in the fridge before reheating.
  • Reheat in a skillet over medium heat, adding a splash of water if needed to loosen the sauce.
