  • 1 package phyllo dough (about 16 sheets), thawed
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted

For the Custard

  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Optional Toppings

  • Powdered sugar
  • Honey or simple syrup
  • Crushed pistachios or almonds

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven
    Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Crinkle the Phyllo
Take one phyllo sheet, gently scrunch it accordion-style, and place it into the dish.
Repeat with all sheets, filling the dish with beautiful waves.
  3. Bake & Butter
Pour melted butter evenly over the crinkled phyllo.
Bake for 10–15 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Prepare Custard
Whisk milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and baking powder until smooth.
  5. Soak the Cake
Remove dish from oven and slowly pour custard over the hot phyllo.
  6. Final Bake
Return to oven and bake 30–35 minutes, until deeply golden and set.
  7. Cool Slightly & Serve
Let rest 10–15 minutes before slicing.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Dust with powdered sugar
  • Drizzle with honey or syrup
  • Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream

💡 Pro Tips

  • Don’t pack the phyllo too tight — air pockets make it crispy
  • Whole milk gives the creamiest custard
  • Want Middle Eastern vibes? Add orange blossom or rose water
