Old-Fashioned Butter Rolls

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

Ad
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • ½ cup whole milk

For the Filling:

  • 4 tbsp softened butter
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional, but classic)

For the Sauce:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • Cut in cold butter until mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
    • Stir in milk until a soft dough forms.
  2. Fill and Roll:
    • Roll the dough into a rectangle (about ¼-inch thick).
    • Spread softened butter evenly over the dough.
    • Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
    • Roll up jelly-roll style and slice into 8–10 rolls. Place them in a greased baking dish.
  3. Make the Sauce:
    • In a saucepan, heat milk, sugar, butter, and vanilla just until butter melts and sugar dissolves (don’t boil).
    • Pour the warm sauce evenly over the rolls in the baking dish.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until rolls are puffed, golden, and the sauce has thickened into a pudding-like base.

Serving:

Serve warm, spooning some of the sweet buttery sauce over each roll. They’re perfect on their own or topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
